Saying 'I Do' on the Beach

So you've decided the beach is the perfect romantic backdrop for saying your vows. Great!  It's hard to top the natural beauty of our coastline for an outdoor wedding.  The beaches here are public and local governments do allow weddings to be held on the beach.  Just be sure to follow individual town rules on things such as parking and wedding accoutrements like gazebos, chairs, and garlands.  When selecting a beach access, think about what can work best for your group's size, including vendors' vehicles.  For example, if your favorite access doesn't have much available parking, perhaps hiring a bus or van service to shuttle guests from their accommodations to the ceremony location, then on to the reception site would be the way to go. Do you need to consider accessibility for certain guests?  Nags Head just completed construction on a wheel chair accessible public beach access near Milepost 11.  For beach wedding regulations for the Town of Nags Head call (252) 441-5508, for the Town of Kill Devil Hills call (252) 449-5300, and for Currituck County (Corolla Beaches) call (252) 232-3055.

Insofar as the weather for your special day on the beach...
Consider the elements.  Think about wind direction and intensity as this can affect many aspects of your preparation from positioning of the wedding party, sound equipment, even floral arrangements to the way you may want to style your hair and veil.  Also think about the time of day that would be best for your beach wedding.  Consult the tide tables and consider the time the sun will be setting on your chosen day.  Many like 1-2 hours before sunset as this tends to be the best light for photographs and because you're less likely to either disturb or be disturbed by other beachgoers.  Also, it's always a good idea to have a backup plan just in case the weather doesn't cooperate.  Set a specific time for a 'final call' and if you decide to change the ceremony location, remember to have a plan for how to inform your guests of the change.

As with any outdoor setting, there's a bit more uncertainty to contend with than an indoor venue, but don't let it worry you too much.  Just apply that saying: "Set it and forget it!" ...  Plan well so that when it's finally here you can enjoy every breathtaking moment of what's bound to be a beautiful OBX beach wedding day, no matter which way the wind blows.

Until Next Time,
Your OBX Wedding Blogger
