Let Them Eat Cake!
Okay, how about this thought... bathing suit season is right around the corner - not to mention your wedding day - so we probably shouldn't be thinking about cake, right? Ah, such splendid caloric temptation. Eh, why not?...
Anything goes for your OBX beach wedding cake. If you can imagine it, someone local can probably make it for you. Here are a few things to keep in mind...
What size cake will you need? Think about your headcount for the reception. A "slice" is normally considered to be 2 ounces or, approximately 4" x 2". Professional cakes can range in price from $2.00 - $15.00 per slice, depending on how intricately designed your cake will be. Budget Tip: Simpler designs should help keep the cost down.

Think Outside The Traditional. You may want to consider something besides the typical round, square, and sheet cake shapes. Many brides opt for cupcakes, mini cakes or even cookies to enhance the casual, fun feel they want to achieve for their destination wedding. Budget Tip: Doing individual cakes on each guest table saves you money because the cakes double as the table centerpiece.

Consider the sun if your reception is outside.
For an evening event this may not be a worry, but for a midday wedding you may want to do an "ornamental" cake with just the bottom section edible for cutting with your groom. Budget Tip: Having an ornamental cake on display and sheet cake behind the scenes for serving guests could save you money.

I think it's important for brides to be able to receive independent reviews of OBX wedding vendors. I was recently married on the Outer Banks (2010) and used Great Cakes! as my vendor. I strongly caution any bride AGAINST using this vendor. They overcharged us and miserably decorated the cake. It was a joke! The ended up charging us double their initial quote, and were incredibly rude in their communication with us. PLEASE do yourselves a favor, brides, and pick a different vendor! There is so much stress associated with your wedding, you should have a cake that looks decent on your wedding day.

I guess you could've gone with Just Desserts but I would suggest you check your cake for cigarette ashes first. (Yuk!) I was married on the OBX 13 years ago and used Argyles for my cake and I have to say it was the dryest, most flavorless cake I have ever had and was truely disappointed at the time. Since then I have eaten at their restaurant and even enjoyed a dessert or two and it has been excellent - actually beyond excellent. I guess what I'm saying is that everyone has a bad day, or in this case, a bad of cake. Dont be so quick to judge based on one person's one-time experience. It's all about communication and maintaining a good vibe with people...don't rule out Great Cakes because of this person. Their key lime is to die for actually! (and I'm not biased in any way, just an ordinary bride and real person who happens to love cake).
