Kids and Your Outer Banks Wedding - Keeping Them Occupied

Allowing kids at your OBX wedding?  It can be a tough call for some...  You love the kids and welcome the idea of them sharing in your special day... but you also love their parents and want them to have a relaxing time.  If inviting children, you of course need to have some fun things for them. Setting up a separate area with a variety of activities is a great way to go and shouldn't put too big a dent in your budget.  "Work" space for coloring, stickers, puzzles and the like will keep kids occupied as will an area for watching movies.

I love this idea:  a mini version of an old fashion drug store candy counter like the one over at The Christmas Shop in Manteo.  You could make up sand pails with trinkets/toys from local area shops like Ben Franklin or Forbes -- maybe even some coupons for things to do while they're here like Jockey's Ridge Crossing stuff for kids or passes for putt-putt & go-karts -- then, let the kids finish filling their pails with favorites from the candy counter. They'll love having a fun take away from the big day.

If there will be lots of little ones at your event, hiring a sitter for the "kids area" is a must!  And for those with more budget to play with, pardon the pun , hiring kids' entertainment like a magician is a great idea.  Much better than any of the grown ups getting stuck at the reception - or worse, the ceremony - trying to keep 'em smiling like poor Steve Martin, a.k.a. Buffalo Bill was it(?), for a birthday party in Parenthood!

When selecting your wedding event home, consider what's already on-site for kids at the rental property.  SN44 - Lost Shaker of Salt in South Nags Head, for example, has a pirate ship, kiddie pool and a mini-golf area!...
